Pita Bread – Easy to make yourself

Pita bread is a great addition to all sorts of Greek and Middle Eastern dishes and tastes wonderful.

Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, this quick and easy flatbread is also a great choice as a side dish for a barbecue or as a snack between meals.

Pita Bread

You can prepare pita bread in the oven , in the pan or even on the grill and in the pizza oven . The only decisive factor is that the pita bread is baked very hot.

The simple yeast dough is prepared in just a few steps and the actual bread baking only takes a few minutes.

In my simple recipe with clear step-by-step instructions, I’ll show you how you can easily make your own pita bread at home.

What is pita bread?

Pita is a flatbread spread from Greece to Turkey to the Middle East, based on a simple yeast dough similar to that used for pizza.

How can you vary pita bread?

You can use a 50% milk and 50% water mixture instead of water to make the yeast dough.

If you want to prepare the yeast dough for your pita bread the day before, you can prepare it with ice-cold water instead of lukewarm water as is usual with yeast dough.

Then you put it in the fridge to rise until the next day. Due to the cold water and the low temperatures, the yeast works much more slowly and you get a great dough that is very fluffy by the next day.

If you want to give your pita a different taste, you can mix in a few delicious herbs right away.

Thyme, oregano or garlic are the best options here, but basically you can use anything you like.

Can you prepare and save pita bread?

You can prepare pita bread very well in advance and keep it covered in a closed container for 2 to 3 days.

If you want to keep the pita bread for a long time, you can also freeze it very well.

To do this, put the pita bread in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer. It stays there for several months.

You can defrost the pita breads at room temperature and briefly put them in the microwave or the preheated oven to heat them up.

Pita Bread – Easy to make yourself

In total time 2 hrs 10 mins
Servings: 6 servings

ingredients

  • 250 grams of flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 pack of dry yeast 7 grams
  • 120 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Besides that:
  • flour for the work surface
  • Olive oil for rubbing the dough

Intructions

  1. In a food processor or food processor:
  2. Place the flour, dry yeast, sugar and salt in the food processor or stand mixer.
  3. Blend briefly to combine the ingredients.
  4. Then add the lukewarm water and olive oil.
  5. Now blend in the food processor on the highest setting for 30 seconds. Knead in the food processor for 5 minutes.
  6. Tip: Depending on the consistency, add a little more water or flour if necessary. What matters is how the dough feels. It should no longer be crumbly, i.e. too dry, but not wet and sticky either.
  7. Preparation with hands:
  8. Place the flour, dry yeast, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix with a spoon
  9. Now gradually add the lukewarm water and the olive oil and work everything into a smooth dough that is no longer sticky. Knead the dough for at least 5 minutes.
  10. Tip: Depending on the consistency, add a little more water or flour if necessary. What matters is how the dough feels. It should no longer be crumbly, i.e. too dry, but not wet and sticky either.
  11. Then place the dough in a bowl lightly oiled with olive oil.
  12. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or cling film.
  13. Now let the dough rise in a warm place for at least 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in volume.
  14. Tip: I find the dough gets better over time. You can let the dough rise for several hours without losing quality. If you don’t want to use the dough until the next day, you can store it in the fridge until then. It will then continue to “walk” only more slowly because of the low temperature in the fridge.
  15. Then place the dough on a lightly floured work surface and knead briefly with your hands.
  16. Then divide the dough into 4 pieces.
  17. The amount of dough is enough for 4 pita breads.
  18. Form the individual pieces of dough into balls with your hands and leave to rise again for 20 minutes.
  19. Then lightly oil each ball with olive oil and roll out with a rolling pin into a thin circle about 15 cm in diameter.
  20. Let the rolled out circles rest for a few minutes before baking.

Preparation in a pan:

  • Fry in a hot pan for about 2 minutes on each side.

Preparation in the oven:

  • Place a pizza stone on a baking sheet in the lower third of the oven.
  • Tip: If you don’t have a pizza stone, simply slide a baking sheet into a rack in the lower third of the oven.
  • Preheat the oven to maximum temperature (top and bottom heat). Depending on your oven, this will take about 20 minutes.
  • Now bake the pita breads for about 2 to 3 minutes per side or until puffed and lightly browned on the outside.
  • Turn once.
  • Enjoy your meal!
